Early Mornings
Retro//Reflection - Issue #42
The most unpleasant part is getting up - especially in the summer months when the alarm rings really early as it is already light at five-thirty. But once I get past that point and I get my stuff and head out, I’m quickly reminded why it’s a great time for photography.
Not specifically for golden hour, or foggy conditions, though.

Walking through a mist-filled field or forest, along the shore of a lake with the sun rising or down a quiet village street, I’m often all by myself. Apart from some wild life or a stray cat maybe. I have all the time to wander about, look around and see what grabs my attention. I’m in nobody’s way and nobody is bothering me …
I like the quietness. It helps me focus on photography because there is little to distract me. And if I want to, I can put my tripod down in the middle of the road and dial in the settings without needing to rush.
Those are the reasons I like to go out early. And yes, golden hour or foggy conditions are nice too!

Time flies though. A couple of hours later I notice the human world waking up. Morning runners and dog walkers, people opening up shops, market people getting ready, more noise. That’s my cue to call it a day and head home.
I do admit, I don’t do this often (enough). I already have to get up early during week days ;-) Often I do these early morning outings while on holiday - somehow then it’s much easier to get up at the break of dawn!

What is your favorite time of the day to photograph?
Ps: this article is also on my website! I’m in the progress of transferring all my Retroreflections posts to my website. You know, in case something ‘happens’ with Substack …
Worthwhile//Reads
Something to end with: here are three (random) photography-related articles I recently read (on Substack) that I think are worth sharing!
Until next time,
Ronald.

Occasionally I send out a letter with a handful of (my) photographs and share a bit of insight on the ‘why?’ or ‘how?’. As an enthusiastic photographer, anything goes.
Maybe you’ll learn something?
Or perhaps it will spark some inspiration?
This publication is free to read (only!), because I’m not doing this to make a profit. Also, I don’t like subscriptions. However, if you do want to show your support, a “coffee” is always appreciated!

It pays off to get up early. Beautiful photos.
I love the early, quiet mornings to shoot as well!
